ASA products are characterised by excellent resistance to weathering, both in terms of mechanical properties and colours. As such, our ASA polymer grades are widely used for leisure and outdoors applications as well as in the automotive industry.
Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate (ASA plastic) is very similar to Acrylonitrile, Butadiene and Styrene (ABS plastic). ASA plastic is made of tiny acrylate rubber particles crosslinked and chemically attached to styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer chains. These particles are then embedded in a styrene-acrylonitrile matrix.
Weathering resistance is the most significant difference between ABS plastic and ASA plastic. ABS plastic cannot withstand prolonged outdoor exposure due to Ultra Violet content within sunlight attacking the butadiene rubber component of the ABS polymer matrix. Over time, this will cause ABS to become ‘brittle.’
